From My Desk | Week of August 16th
Happy Sunday 👋
Just wanted to share some money, real estate and personal updates from my corner of the world lately.
Employees are switching jobs faster than I can type this
For the last few years (especially since the pandemic), we’ve been noticing a trend amongst 9-to-5ers - people are changing jobs more frequently than previous generations. In fact, changing jobs every few years has become much more common.
Why?
It’s probably one of the easiest ways to increase your income, rather than waiting for your current employer to give you a raise. It’s unfortunate, but it’s the truth.
If you’ve recently switched jobs, send me a message. There may be a few things you need to take care of before you simply move on to the new job — and some of them can have long-term financial consequences.
Those pesky high interest savings accounts are back …
And I’m not happy. Every time there’s market uncertainty, banks LOVE to push their promotional high interest savings rates.
And I get it. Seeing a 4.6% rate makes it sound like your money is sitting somewhere safe and earning a great return.
But be careful.
Unless you’re parking money for a short period of time, a promotional savings rate may not be the best place for money you’re investing for the long term.
Here’s why it’s so important to read the fine print.
One of the big banks right now is touting a special 4.6% high-interest savings account. Sounds wonderful, right?
Except that once you read the fine print, you’re actually only getting 1.575% annually — not 4.6%.
Don’t make a long-term decision based on a short-term rate and always read the fine print.
If you’re considering moving a significant amount of money into one because of a promotional rate, send me the details first. It’s worth getting a second opinion.
We got the contract! 🎉
Last week, OWNI.ai and Lin Sok Services Financiers Inc secured a contract with a real estate developer to sell 13 newly constructed condos adjacent to NDG.
Units range from $400K to $1.8M and some of them are particularly interesting co-buying opportunities, including a 3-bedroom penthouse with a wraparound terrasse that I’m already ready to throw a party on 😂
We’ll also be managing the sales of their new 52-unit development in the heart of the city, with pre-sales launching in 2027.
This is an exciting one because it brings together so many of the things we’ve been working on — real estate, financing, affordability and finding creative ways for people to become owners.
If you’re curious about co-buying or want to see what some of these opportunities look like, reach out to me.
What do women founders really need?
Last Thursday, I spoke at a Women Techmakers Montréal event about three of my favourite topics — women, entrepreneurship and money.
We keep hearing that we need more women in tech, more women entrepreneurs and more access to capital for women founders.
Yes to all three. But can we move beyond just talking about it?
The hard truth is the system won’t change until more of us are in positions of power and that requires more of us to have capital, own assets and be in those financial positions.
So here’s my unpopular opinion — maybe talking more isn’t going to move the needle. Maybe we need to start owning more. If they’re not going to hand it to us, why not build it for ourselves.
Thoughts?
Thank you to Stefania Pecore and the team at Women Techmakers Montreal for all you do for the city’s tech community. Visit their website to find out more about WTM.
